Strategy

How about this for a strategy? Let MoveOn bank up a bunch of truthful but critical anti-Bush ads. Then let one out every time a truly "shadowy 527" runs a smear about Kerry. After each one makes the initial splash, wait for Kerry to condemn it. When he does, drop it and wait for the next negative ad. Kerry will be clearly in opposition to the tactics of negative campaigning yet there will be no ground ceded to Karl Rove. You could even publicly announce that such is your plan. When the negative ads stop coming from the Bush surrogates, MoveOn also stops. In this way the political debate will be not so much controlled as it is trained.

If I recall correctly, Bush has been picking on Kerry for switching on issues not on service during vietnam, not on unproven links to al-qieda or the rest of the long laundry list that the Dem's have been slinging at Bush. Kerry has plenty to talk about just with his history in the senate, just not good things for him. That is why he relies on four months over 30 years ago to justify him to president today. What about things he did in senate, bills he pushed through? Nah that would just lead to the truth that he is a nothing senator.

As to strategy, Moveon.org should come out with a new and hard-hitting ad video every week, even if it only buys minimal airtime for it in one state. The idea is to get the cable channels to show it over and over and over for free to a national audience. Which is exactly what they tend to do, most especially CNN, and at CNN, most especially Wolf Blitzer.

However, the ads shouldn't be of the kind in which Moveon.org used Hitler. That generates all heat and no light, and tends to discredit Moveon.org while generating sympathy for the other side.

Bush's record of "accomplishments" is so thoroughly, unremittingly awful, there's ample factual material on which to base damning ads.
